What is AutoPASS for ferry?

• AutoPASS is an automatic payment system for road tolls and ferries in Norway.
• When you travel on our ferries, you only pay for the vehicle and driver.
• Passengers and people travelling without a vehicle travel free of charge.*

How does AutoPASS for ferry work?

AutoPASS for ferry is connected to the vehicle register in Norway. When you drive on board, we photograph the vehicle’s number plate in order to receive payment for the ferry journey.

International vehicles?

Vehicles that don’t have Norwegian number plates can pay with

FerryPay

Are you a tourist on holiday in Norway? If so, we recommend using FerryPay on our ferries. FerryPay is an automatic card payment for ferry journey. It enables you to easily pay the full price for the ferry without receiving an invoice.

AutoPASS

AutoPASS is an automatic payment system for road tolls and ferries in Norway. International vehicles can only use AutoPASS with a prepayment agreement.

Can I pay by card?

Yes, but it may cause delays. Consequently, we recommend paying by FerryPay or an AutoPASS agreement.

Debit or credit card

You can only pay with a contactless debit or credit card. If you pay by debit/credit card, you will pay the full price for the ferry journey. If you have an electric vehicle, you will not be charged the EV price and will need to pay the same price that applies for fossil and hybrid vehicles. If you don’t have a contactless card, you must pay with FerryPay.

Are there other ways to pay?

If you cannot use any of these payment options, you will not be able to travel by ferry.

Fares and discounts with AutoPASS for ferry

The Directorate of Public Roads sets the AutoPASS fare scale, which is a national fare scale based on:

• the length of the ferry journey (the number of zones)
• the total length of the vehicle, including trailer and cargo

The AutoPASS fare scale states the fare without discount (full price).

The number plate must be readable

When you drive on board the ferry, the number plate must be readable and not covered with road dust, snow or ice, etc. This makes our task easier and prevents delays.

How do we know how much you should pay?

We photograph the vehicle’s number plate when you drive on board. AutoPASS then automatically identifies if the vehicle has a valid discount agreement. If the vehicle is registered with an AutoPASS tag, the ordinary 10% discount will apply.

Do you have a trailer?

If you have a trailer or cargo, the crew on board will measure the total length to ensure the payment is correct. If you have a prepayment agreement for vehicles up to 8.0 m and the actual length including cargo exceeds this, you will not receive the prepayment discount for this journey.

How do I order an AutoPASS tag?

To get an AutoPASS tag, you need to register an agreement with a toll service provider.

When creating a new AutoPASS agreement, you will be asked to choose a toll service provider to issue your AutoPASS tag. It makes no difference which service provider you choose. You will receive the same discount regardless.

Do you already have an AutoPASS tag?

Do you already have an AutoPASS tag?If you already have a valid AutoPASS tag, you can use that tag and automatically receive a 10% discount on the ferries. You don’t need to do anything to receive this discount.

The agreement or tag cannot be transferred to others.

Important information about the AutoPASS tag

• The tag is proof that an agreement has been entered into between you and the toll service provider that issued the tag.
• Everyone with an agreement linked to an AutoPASS tag is obliged to install and use the tag as specified by the issuer.
• We don’t register the AutoPASS tag on board our ferries, but rather photograph the vehicle’s number plate.
• You cannot use the tag in vehicles other than those stated in the agreement.
• You can use the AutoPASS tag for road toll stations, tunnels and other ferry connections in Norway.
• You are responsible for the safekeeping and use of your tag.
• In the event of loss, you are responsible for notifying the issuer of the tag.

How do I create a prepayment agreement?

A prepayment agreement for ferry gives you a 50% discount. You must obtain an AutoPASS before you can create a prepayment agreement.

• With a prepayment agreement, you pay an amount per vehicle.
• The cost of the ferry ticket is automatically deducted from your prepaid amount.
• Discounts will be granted when you have obtained your tag and payment of your prepaid amount has been registered.

Complaints

If you wish to complain about your ferry ticket, you must lodge a complaint no later than 30 days after you were informed about the amount charged.

Send your complaint to Skyttel, which is responsible for payment in AutoPASS.

Privacy protection

The purpose of registering personal data about you is to implement the agreement about full price or discounted payment for travel on ferries covered by the national solution for AutoPASS for ferry.

 Personal data about you and your transit data will only be used for administration of AutoPASS for ferry. Transit data will be anonymised and used for traffic statistics.

 Photography is used to document the class or length of the vehicle for the discount agreement. Data about each individual transit is erased as quickly as possible after each journey is paid for.

 Upon entering into the agreement, personal data about you will be registered because this is necessary to implement the discount agreement, for correct ticketing and to process any complaints.

In the event of a dispute over the payment obligation, the data will be stored until the claim has been settled or legally resolved. You can at any time request access to information stored about you. You can at any time request the erasure of stored information about you.

Upon termination of the agreement, all data will be erased in accordance with the current rules relating to privacy and accounting. Upon entering into this agreement, you consent to the transfer of transit data between the issuer and carrier when processing any complaints related to transits.

Rental cars

Most rental cars have an AutoPASS agreement linked to the rental company. The rental company usually sends a separate invoice for this after the journey.

Remember that the fare will depend on the rental company’s AutoPASS agreement. If you are unsure, we recommend checking this in advance.
